However, in the introduction of advanced gadgets nowadays, an electronic wine-tasting tongue can defy and challenge the finest wine taster on earth. It is a small device that has a multi-sensor chip. It can sense divergent characteristics of wine varieties. It can also analyse a wine’s acidity, alcohol level and sugar content. Just like the human tongue, this device is sensitive to acidic, salty, sweet, savoury and sour tastes. Thus, using this gadget allows wine specialists to quickly analyse the variety of grapes used and the year of a wine’s production. Instead of waiting days to get the laboratory results, the wine specialists can obtain the analysis within seconds.

Quality of wines
It was a group of scientists from the Barcelona Institute of Microelectronics, Spain, spearheaded by Cecilia Jiménez-Jorquera, who invented the multi-sensor chip. According to her, the device can detect frauds committed, especially concerning the vintage year of the wine. This electrically manipulated wine-taster is handy, competitively priced and has the ability to be programmed. It is suitable for new varieties in wines. Tiny, synthetic membranes are incorporated in the device dubbed as the e-tongue. Each membrane is sensitive to diverse chemical components found in a wine. It can already distinguish the difference between the elements found in Malvasia, Chardonnay, Aire and Macabeu grape varieties, among many others. Currently, the scientists are developing an electronic wine-tasting widget that is said to provide more precise, accurate and reliable results. Developers say this device will be more sophisticated than the human sense of taste. The device will be modified so that it will be able to provide results in exact precision. With the present standing of this unlikely yet promising wine-tasting device, it is not a far-fetched truth that, indeed, a more suave and urbane e-tongue is a reality-in-the-making.
